This course is an introduction to Kant’s first Critique, the Critique of Pure Reason. It will be a close reading of the text. If there is enough interest, it will be continued in the following semester, probably with an emphasis on the problem of free will. We will use the good old Kemp Smith translation, which should be easily available in Taiwan. Also the translations by Pluhar and Guyer-Wood are useful, especially for comparisons. I will also point out central notions from the German. For secondary literature, I recommend the works by H.J. Paton 1936, A.C. Ewing 1938, Robert Howell 1992, Reinhard Brandt 1995, Peter Baumanns 1997, Georg Mohr & Marcus Willaschk (eds.) 1998, Beatrice Longuenesse 1998, Paul Natterer 2003, Henry E. Allison 2004, Otfried Hoffe 2004, Graham Bird 2006, and of course there is more.
